CS37: New Biologic Materials for Pulpal Vitality

Vital pulp therapy may be broadly defined as any aspect of restorative dental treatment intended to minimize trauma to the dental pulp. The source of calcium silicates (hydraulic calcium silicate cements) will be discussed and the other possible sources of bioactive calcium, such as calcium hydroxyapatite, will be mentioned.

Techniques for placement in direct restorative protocols will be described, step by step, along with the use of TheraCal LC in trauma. The use of the bioactive materials for pulpotomies of primary teeth will be shown, along with the techniques for final restoration.

The presentation will include a history of the development of calcium silicates as they are now used in dentistry, with the Presenter further elucidating on his personal participation in writing this history.

Mark L. Cannon D.D.S., M.S.

Mark L. Cannon D.D.S., M.S., is founder of Associated Dental Specialists of Long Grove, in addition, he is a Professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Division of Dentistry, and is the Research Coordinator of Pediatric Dentistry at Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Cannon is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Dentistry with a Masters of Science in Pedodontics. He received his Certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he also completed an anesthesiology clerkship, and has attended the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Bethesda, MD where he received a Certificate in Forensic Odontology.
