On Sunday, February 26th, Daniel A. ‘Danny’ Bobrow, MBA (finance), MBA (marketing) will deliver a presentation entitled The Oral Systemic Periodontal Practice.

Mr. Bobrow’s talk commences at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 11:30 when Drs. For the third time since 2010, American Dental Corporation president Daniel A. ‘Danny’ Bobrow was in Nepal, in part for personal recreation, and in part to support philanthropy in the world’s 12th poorest country.

His twofold goal in visiting is to monitor and support the Climb For A Cause / SmileTree oral health education and treatment projects that are organized and delivered by its in-country partner, Global Dental Relief, and for Bobrow to reach the summit of Ama Dablam, considered to be the world’s highest technical climb.

Following are excerpts from Bobrow’s audio journal

Arrival In Doha

It is 5 p.m. local time in Doha, Qatar. Very pleasant 12 hour flight, notwithstanding a window seat last row. I managed to climb behind the passenger to my right to be able to extricate myself at will without inconveniencing him with my frequent, some necessary, other merely desirable, jaunts about the cabin. Great service. I recommend Qatar Airlines.

I am just waiting now for my shuttle to take me to the Century Hotel here in Doha, all graciously arranged by the airline to accommodate my 17 hour layover before heading on to Kathmandu tomorrow.

Looking forward to a great night’s sleep, dinner, breakfast, and a workout at their gym, which includes jacuzzi tub and sauna, prior to my 4.5 flight to Kathmandu.

Trip is off to a great start!

Arrival In Kathmandu

Flight departed and arrived right on schedule. The line to purchase my visa was short, and it did not take too long to retrieve my checked bags. The well over 50 kilo load was barely able to fit into the vehicle awaiting to escort me, as in 2014, to the Shakti Hotel in the Thamel District of Kathmandu.

Tomorrow, I head to the Shree Mangal Dvip (SMD) School in eastern Kathmandu, to chronicle, and support the professionals and lay volunteers who will, over the next two weeks, deliver oral health education and treatment to over 2000 needy children.

ADM President Shares Update On Dental Clinic

And here’s a Special Message from those we serve.

Brush Your Teeth!

With personal thanks to Global Dental Relief and Wangchuk Rapten Lama, the Sri Mangal Dvip’s Medical Officer.

Hi, it’s Danny Bobrow, coming to you from Kathmandu, at the Sri Mangal Dvip School in eastern Kathmandu where the first of two oral health education and treatment clinics have just gotten underway.  In the next seven days, sixteen volunteers (5 dentists, 2 hygienists, and 9 laypeople) will deliver care and education to over one thousand children and needy adults, and then just three days later we do it again. That’s over 2,000 people treated in just over two weeks.

We couldn’t do it without your support, Thanks to you, since 2007, we’ve delivered care to over 50,000 children at 70 such clinics with equivalent care valued at over $10 million US.

What we find particularly gratifying is that it’s not merely one time care, or what I term ‘flash in the pan dentistry.’  Each child gets their own dental chart and commits that they see a dentist at least every two years.  It may not be the same dentist, but in this way we assure they are not only educated about what constitutes good oral hygiene but also receive any necessary care so they can lead a healthy, happy life free of oral pain, and be contributing members to their society

On behalf of everyone whose lives your generosity touches, I thank you for sharing our vision and commitment to better oral care worldwide.

Here’s to helping another 50,000 children!

Update On Nepal Earthquake And Effect On Dental Charity

Update On Nepal Earthquake And Effect On Dental Charity

It’s Danny Bobrow coming to you from the Sree Mangal Dvip (SMD) School, where the Climb For A Cause / SmileTree dental charity’s Oral Health Education and Treatment Project, in partnership with our in country partner Global Dental Relief, is underway.

Over the next two weeks 16 volunteers will treat over 2,000 needy children, an indicaiton of the efficiency with which the projects operate, and of which we are, I think, rightly proud.

In may 2015, a devastating earthquake struck Nepal. Among its many casualties were SMD’s main School Building, and the building housing the clinic.

Within 24 hours of the earthquake, we issued a Challenge Grant to help repair the buildings. The extent and speed of the response surprised even me.

Between SmileTree, Climb For A Cause, and Global Dental Relief, we raised over $54,000!

I’m here today with the SMD School’s Medical Officer Wangchuck Rapten Lama to tell us about what the funds were able to do and the current status of the Rebuilding Effort.

Hon. Rapten “We are using the money not only to repair the clinic and Main School Building, but also to get ready for our next clinic. In the mean time, we’ve needed to conduct our classes in temporary tent structures.”

Rapten continues “Things do take time here in Nepal, but we expect the Main School Building to be ready for occupancy very soon.”

Anyone interested in participating in a future project (and a life transforming experience) is encouraged to email ADM’s president, and the Foundation’s executive director.

Earthquake Relief For Nepal

Earthquake Relief For Nepal

On April 25th, 2015 a high magnitude earthquake struck a wide area in Nepal, including its most capital and most populous city, Kathmandu. Among its casualties was the school that is Host to the Climb For A Cause / SmileTree sponsored oral health education and treatment project.

The dental clinic and main school building of the Sri Mangal Dvip (SMD) School in the Boudi District of Kathmandu were heavily damaged, with the latter being declared condemned by the municipal authorities.

Within 24 hours of learning of the disaster Climb For A Cause issued an Emergency Challenge Grant to raise funds to repair the structures.  Within just two days of issuing the Grant, $54,000 was raised; enough to repair both structures.

During a visit to the School ADM president and Climb For A Cause executive director Daniel A. ‘Danny’ Bobrow had the privilege of meeting with thd School’s Medical Officer Wang Chuk Rapten Lama, who shared with Bobrow how and when the funds were used. “We were able to repair the damage to the clinic rather quickly.” shared Wang Chuk. “Because of the severe damage to the main school building, repairs were more extensive and consequently took longer to complete. In fact, final repairs will not be completed for another two months. In the mean time, our students have been taught in makeshift tents and other structures.  Everyone will be grateful to have their building back, and are extremely grateful to the Climb For A Cause Foundation for making this a reality for us.” concludes Wang Chuk.

Smile Tree Clinic Commences In Kathmandu

Smile Tree Clinic Commences In Kathmandu

Following a late evening arrival in Kathmandu on 10-18-16 to prepare for a month of trekking and climbing in the Khumbu Region, ADM president Daniel A. ‘Danny’ Bobrow’s first order of business was to visit the Sri Mangal Dvip (SMD) School in the Boudi District.  The School is home to one of two Nepal-based Climb For A Cause / SmileTree sponsored oral health education and treatment projects.

In a little over two weeks, the Team of five dentists, two hygienists, and nine laypersons, all of them volunteers, will treat over 2,000 children.

As many know, Climb For A Cause / SmileTree projects are structured to ensure that each child treated has a dental chart created for them, and is guaranteed a visit from a dentist at least once every two years. “We’re committed to ensuring these children receive the benefit of regular dental visits” says ADM president, and the Dentists Climb For A Cause Foundation’s executive director Daniel A. ‘Danny’ Bobrow.

To date, the Foundation has delivered dental care to over fifty thousand deserving children in seventy projects such as the one currently underway in Kathmandu.  The equivalent dollar value of care delivered is in excess of $10 million.

None of this is possible without the generous support of individuals and businesses inside and outside of dentistry.

There are several ways to help “put BIG smiles on little faces.” These include:

  1. Climbing For A Cause – Join CFAC in one of its Annual Hiking Events.  2017 marks its 20 Anniversary.  Hikes are one day in duration and, while physically challenging are not considered ‘technical’ ascents.
  2. Become a ‘Branch Office’ of the Smile Tree – For as little as $75 a month you can help deliver desperately needed care and education to needy children domestically and abroad.  Branch Offices receive complimentary promotional support to ensure their good works are not kept a secret, compliments of ADM Cause Related Marketing.
  3. Volunteer to serve on a CFAC / ST Oral Health Education and Treatment Project – dentists, hygienists and non clinician alike are welcome to apply.  Those who have participated report a life transforming experience
  4. Do all three – CFAC /ST Alumni have met like minded professionals while Making A Difference by participating in the Annual Event, being a Branch Office and serving on a project.

Headed To Kathmandu in about 6 hours

Headed To Kathmandu in about 6 hours

Given its 12 hour duration, and the fact I was stuck in a window seat, my flight from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport to Doha, Qatar was surprisingly pleasant. Key to that was my ability to climb behind the passenger in the aisle seat, which meant I could come and go without disturbing (or incurring the wrath) of my neighbor. Climbing indeed has its advantages even in Civilization.

I also got a chance to watch Chasing Niagara, an awe inspiring documentary about a team of extreme kayakers “Falls Runners,” who traveled the Americas hurling themselves over astounding high and raging waterfalls in prep for an attempt to do the same with Niagara Falls.  No spoiler alert here – just a ‘must see’ recommendation.

I’ll arrive Kathmandu too late this evening to do much other than check in, look for functioning outlets to charge up my electronics and grab a quick dinner.

Tomorrow, 9/19/16 I will begin the day with a visit to the Sri Mangal Dvip Orphanage in east Kathmandu. This is the site of one of the Climb For A Cause / Smile Tree supported oral health education and treatment projects. It is also the structure so badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake we had to stage a (successful) emergency campaign to raise sufficient funds to shore up the structure. Thanks to so many incredibly generous people, practices, and corporations, we were able to do so within a 24 hour period!

Following my visit to the School, I’ll be doing some last minute shopping for medications (Decadron, Diamox, Cialis) – to improve my ‘performance’ – at altitude, and oh yes, dental floss (can you believe i forgot to pack that? Somewhat excusable as my normal regiment involves a series of rinses and does not include regular flossing – issue is that a 30 day supply of the liquids is too cumbersome to haul up the Khumbu Valley).

With luck, I’ll be landing in Lukla early on the morning of October 20th, to begin my trek, first to Everest Base Camp (while en route delivering tooth brushes to several schools around Namche Bazar), then a summit attempt of Island Peak, and finally a push to the summit of Ama Dablam, to finish what I began in 2014.

How successful I will be posting from the Khumbu on my cell phone remains to be seen.

Stay Tuned and thanks again for everyone’s support and well wishes.

Headed To Nepal To ‘Climb For A Cause’

Headed To Nepal To ‘Climb For A Cause’

ADM’s president Daniel A. ‘Danny’ Bobrow is headed to Nepal to visit one of his Foundation’s oral health education and treatment projects.  On October 19th, Bobrow will meet with In-country partner Laurie Mathews to inspect the School, located in eastern Kathmandu.

The following day, he flies to Lukla to begin a trek to Everest Base Camp (17,700 asl), followed by and attempted summit of Island Peak (20,005 asl). Along the way, Bobrow will distribute tooth brushes to schools located in and around Namche Bazaar.

In 2014, Bobrow reached 20,000 feet on Ama Dablam.  This year, equipped with a new acclimatization regimen, including medications and the aforementioned treks, he plans to ‘finish what I started.’

While internet and cellular access is rare in the Khumbu Valley, Bobrow hopes to connect periodically at villages that are so equipped and send dispatches of his progress.

“I’ll do my best to keep those with an interest kept apprised of my progress.” says Bobrow.
